Read your vehicle manual – Before you even consider purchasing a baby car seat, the first thing you will need to do is read the owner’s manual of your vehicle, to see exactly where the baby car seat should go, and how it should be installed. Different vehicles are designed in different ways, so just because one vehicle allows for a baby seat to be installed on the front seat, that does not mean that all vehicles will be the same. To avoid any risk of confusion, take the time to read the manual of your vehicle.

Choose the correct type of seat for your child – Different children of different sizes and ages require different types of car seat, so make sure you choose the correct one. rear facing seats are for infants and newborns, to help protect their heads in the event of a collision of any kind. You will know when your child is too big for a rear facing seat, because their head will be within an inch of the top of the seat.

Measure the back of your car – If you are ready for a car seat that fits into the back of the car, you will need to make sure you measure the rear of the car to ensure that it does indeed fit where it is supposed to. If your car is narrow, a wide based seat may be out of the question, especially of you have older children who will be sitting in the back also.

Know the law – Here in the UK, children require a specialist car seat up until the age of 12, or until they reach at least 135cm in height. This seat must display an E on the label, to indicate that it meets necessary standards and requirements, plus the child must fit into the correct category as well.

Familiarize yourself with i-Size and ISOFIX – I-Size is a new legislation for child car seats in the UK, and it was introduced in 2013. This legislation was introduced to provide increased rates of protection for young children. I-Size seats are based around the height of a child, rather the weight, meaning that babies can travel in rear facing seats for longer. ISOFIX is a car seat fitting system installed in all new vehicles, allowing ISOFIX seats to easily be installed in a matter of seconds.
